Ableton Live does not natively allow for multiple MIDI channel output from MIDI plugins. However, no matter which version of Ableton Live you are using, this FREE method serves as a workaround to enable you to do so anyway.
If you own Ableton Live Suite and wish to use a somewhat simpler method, please visit this link. Please note this link is ONLY for owners of Ableton Live Suite and will not work on Intro or Standard.
Instructions for PC Users (scroll down for Mac users):
- Download and install Kushview Element for free here.
- Download loopMIDI for free here.
- Complete installation for both applications.
- Open loopMIDI, click the "+" sign in the bottom-left, and name the port something like "InstaComposer All"
- Open Kushview Element. Go to File > Preferences > MIDI and under MIDI Output Device, select the device you just created in loopMIDI.
- Load InstaComposer in Kushview Element. You can do this one of a few ways:
- Go to File > Preferences > General and select YES next to "Scan plugins on startup", then close and reopen Element and wait for the scan to finish. Then select InstaComposer from the plugin list.
- If you are impatient, simply right-click in the mapping area, go to Plugins > Unverified and find InstaComposer in the list there.
- Once InstaComposer is open, drag from the orange dot at the bottom of the InstaComposer module in the mapping area to the orange dot on the MIDI Out module.
- In InstaComposer, add a pattern to all 5 tracks. You can do this quickly by selecting ALL in the bottom-left of the plugin and clicking GO.
- Open Ableton Live and go to Options > Preferences > Link Tempo MIDI. Under MIDI Ports, you should see the MIDI output that you created in loopMIDI. check the box for TRACK next to the device.
- Create 5 MIDI tracks in Ableton. Set MIDI From to the MIDI device you created in loopMIDI, and select channels 1-5 on each of your 5 tracks (channel 1 on track 1, channel 2 on track 2, and so on).
- Set Monitor to IN on all 5 tracks.
- Press play on InstaComposer. Your InstaComposer patterns should now be playing separately on the 5 tracks in Ableton.
Instructions for Mac Users:
- Download and install Kushview Element for free here.
- Download MIDI Patchbay for free here.
- Complete installation for both applications.
- Open Audio MIDI Setup from Applications > Utilities on your Mac.
- Go to Window > Show MIDI Studio.
- Double-click IAC Driver and check the box for Device is Online.
- Open MIDI Patchbay.
- In MIDI Input, select IAC Driver Bus 1, and for MIDI Output, click Edit Virtual Outputs, and create a new output called something like "InstaComposer All".
- Open Kushview Element. Go to File > Preferences > MIDI and under MIDI Output Device, select the device you just created in MIDI Patchbay.
- Load InstaComposer in Kushview Element. You can do this one of a few ways:
- Go to Element > Preferences > General and select YES next to "Scan plugins on startup", then close and reopen Element and wait for the scan to finish. Then select InstaComposer from the plugin list.
- If you are impatient, you can either drag InstaComposer.vst from your plugin folder onto the window, or simply right-click in the mapping area, go to Plugins > Unverified and find InstaComposer in the list there.
- Once InstaComposer is open, drag from the orange dot at the bottom of the InstaComposer module in the mapping area to the orange dot on the MIDI Out module.
- In InstaComposer, add a pattern to all 5 tracks. You can do this quickly by selecting ALL in the bottom-left of the plugin and clicking GO.
- Open Ableton Live and go to Live > Preferences > Link Tempo MIDI. Under MIDI Ports, you should see the MIDI output that you created in MIDI Patchbay. check the box for TRACK next to the device.
- Create 5 MIDI tracks in Ableton. Set MIDI From to the MIDI device you created in MIDI Patchbay, and select channels 1-5 on each of your 5 tracks (channel 1 on track 1, channel 2 on track 2, and so on).
- Set Monitor to IN on all 5 tracks.
- Press play on InstaComposer. Your InstaComposer patterns should now be playing separately on the 5 tracks in Ableton.
